Job Description

SoBran is seeking a Veterinary Technician II to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Poolesville, Maryland (LARC 8).

Veterinary Technician II

This is a general summary of the responsibilities associated with the position of Veterinary Technician II for the NIH, Laboratory Animal Research Contract (LARC) in Poolesville, MD.  This description is not inclusive of all duties required to successfully complete the job each day.  It is intended to reflect SoBran’s contractual obligations to the LARC.  Employees are expected to complete all assigned duties each day.

OVERVIEW:   Responsibilities of this position are that of a Veterinary Technician II for SoBran’s NIA contract.


Duty schedules are set at the discretion of the unit supervisor and/or SoBran Management to meet the requirements of the contract.  Shifts typically occur between 6:00am and 3:30pm weekdays. In addition, employees may be required to work beyond their scheduled shift or on non-scheduled days when unanticipated or emergency situations arise. 

Duties (non-inclusive list):

  1. Understand and follow all Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Assurance Standards.
  2. Assist the veterinary and research staff with examinations and procedures, and alert them to emergencies or other animal related problems.
  3. Administer clinical and study-related treatments as directed (PO, IM, SQ, IV, ID).
  4. Monitor the health status of all animals in NIA colony.
  5. Safely and correctly handle and restrain animals for observation and procedure.
  6. Collect and record physiological data (pulse, respiration, heart rate, body temp, etc.).
  7. Collect, preserve and prepare blood, urine, stool, and tissue samples for testing and shipment.
  8. Calculate drug dosages and administration frequencies.
  9. Identify and communicate signs of abnormal health and behavior.
  10. Maintain all logs, electronic medical records and documentation accurately.
  11. Completes animal treatment updates and communicate changes with veterinary staff
  12. Assist the veterinary and research staff with surgical preparations and procedures.
  13. Responsible for cleaning and sanitization of procedure areas and carts
  14. Provide technical guidance and training to level I and II staff
  15. Assist with the coordination of daily tasks to ensure everything is completed in a thorough, efficient, and timely manner.
  16. Develop and foster effective teamwork among the staff and management team.
  17. Keep an open line of communication so that management and husbandry staff are aware of all ongoing issues.
  18. Collect post-mortem specimens for shipment or evaluation
  19. Participate in weekly technical or SOP training.
  20. Perform other duties as assigned.



Employees’ appointed to the position of Veterinary Technician II must meet one of the following standards prior to appointment:

  • An Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in one of the Physical Sciences, Animal Sciences, or related discipline
  • Combination of experience and education.


Employees must hold an AALAS certification at the LATg level or hold LAT certification and successfully complete the LATg certification within one calendar year of appointment. 


2-3 years as a Veterinary Technician or Research Technician working with non-human primates.
