SoBran is seeking a Veterinary Technician I (Non-Human Primates) to serve in Bethesda, Maryland.   

OVERVIEW:   Responsibilities of this position are that of a Veterinary Technician I for the NIH, Animal Care Project   These responsibilities include all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of on-site animals.


*All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned, arrive to work at 7 am and depart at 3:30 pm M-F.  You will be required to work on the weekends as scheduled.  The weekend hours are from 8 am to 12 pm.  In addition you will be expected to work extra hours during an emergency situation or if any unexpected situation arise until work is completed

Duties (non-inclusive list):

  1. Understand and follow all Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Assurance Standards. 
  2. Assist the veterinary staff with examinations and procedures, and alert them to emergencies or other animal related problems. 
  3. Administer clinical treatments as directed (Topical, PO, IM, SQ, IV, ID). 
  4. Monitor the health status of all animals. 
  5. Safely and correctly handle and restrain animals for observation and procedure. 
  6. Collect and record physiological data (pulse, respiration, heart rate, body temperature, etc.). 
  7. Calculate drug dosages and administration frequencies. 
  8. Identify and communicate signs of abnormal health and behavior in multiple species. 
  9. Maintain medical records accurately. 
  10. Assist the veterinary and research staff with surgical preparations and procedures. 
  11. Collect, preserve and prepare blood, urine, stool, and tissue samples for testing and shipment. 
  12. Place and maintain all forms and methods of animal identification in all species. 
  13. Participate in all required trainings (topics may include: animal specific information and technical procedures, medical care, OSHA, regulatory, ASP support, and standard operating procedures). 
  14. Achieve and maintain a proficiency score of at least 95% within one year of appointment, and each year thereafter. 
  15. Maintain breeding colony management and recordkeeping. 
  16. Collect post-mortem specimens for shipment or evaluation. 
  17. Supervise caretakers during weekend shifts. 
  18. Participate in weekly technical or SOP training. 
  19. Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.



Employees’ appointed to the position of Veterinary Technician I must meet one of the following standards prior to appointment:

  • An Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in one of the Physical Sciences, Animal Sciences, or related discipline.
  • A combination of work experience and/or AALAS certification may be substituted for a degree.


  • Existing ALAT certification and complete LAT within 1 year of hire/eligibility required.

Experience required

  • 2 years of experience as a veterinary technologist in the Laboratory Animal field working with multiple species preferred, will consider candidates with comparable experience and length of service in companion animal practice.
