SoBran is seeking a Veterinary Technician III to serve at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

OVERVIEW: Responsibilities of this position are that of a Veterinary Technician III for the NIH, Animal Care Project. These responsibilities include all activities required for the proper care and maintenance of on-site animals

This position’s responsibilities include:

  1. Understand and follow all Standard Operating Procedures and Quality Assurance Standards
  2. Administer clinical treatments as directed (Topical, PO, IM, SQ, IV, ID) to critical and chronic animals
  3. Safely and correctly handle and restrain animals for observation and/or minor procedures
  4. Identify and communicate signs of abnormal health or poor health
  5. Maintain medical records accurately
  6. Participate in weekly technical or SOP training
  7. Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned
  8. Assist veterinarian with examinations and procedures, and alert veterinarian of emergencies or animal problems.
  9. Calculate doses.
  10. Collect physiological data (pulse, respiration, heart rate, body temperature, etc.)
  11. Provide technical assistance as needed (Ear tagging, bleeds, post op care, etc.)
  12. Floor supervision for technician staff assigned to NICHD facility.
  13. Delegate tasks to all veterinary technicians.
  14. Collect sentinel samples as scheduled (Blood samples or whole sample).
  15. Perform monthly inventory and relay information to project management.
  16. Properly maintain the sentinel animal program as per applicable facility SOP’s.
  17. Properly maintain the controlled drug lockbox as per applicable facility SOP’s.
  18. Ensure the functionality of all animal facility refrigerators and freezers.
  19. Ensure that animal carcasses are disposed of following established procedures.
  20. Ensure that all waste from the facility is disposed of on a daily basis.
  21. Maintain a weekly inventory of all gas tanks and veterinary treatment related supplies.
  22. Provide quality assurance to include animal health surveillance, monitoring of the effectiveness of facility sanitation, monitor the lighting, rack air flows, feed/water/bedding contamination levels, and any other quality assurance services as deemed necessary by the Project Officer.
  23. Provide proper care, use and maintenance of equipment and facilities as outlined in approved facility SOP's.
  24. Prepares and submits required written records, charts, logs and inventories as requested by your supervisor.
  25. Maintain employee performance evaluations.
  26. Familiar with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for chemicals used in the work area.
  27. Assists in any contract related activity, as assigned by your supervisor, to complete the required work.
  28. Always think safety first when performing daily duties.
  29. Weekend, holiday, and after hours work is required as necessary to meet operational needs of the work site.
  30. Perform other duties as assigned.

Schedule Requirements: 

 *All employees are expected to perform their duties as assigned, arrive to work at 7:00 am and depart at 3:30 pm M-F. You will be required to work on the weekends as scheduled. The weekend hours are from 7 am to 3:30 pm. (no more than 8 hours per day).In addition you will be expected to work extra hours during an emergency situation or if any unexpected situation arise until work is completed 

Background Requirements:

  1. B.S. degree in biology, animal science, or similar discipline preferred.
  2. Fundamental knowledge of medical terminology.
  3. Supervisory experience is desirable.
  4. LATG certification.
